I wouldn't know a split infinitive or a dangling participle if one jumped up to bite me! I do, however, understand the differences between books that are fan-glued, sewn as single pages or sewn as gatherings on tapes or cords. and so many other facets of bookbinding that I've learned in more than a decade of bookbinding studies.
Bookbinding-like writing-is a craft that can appear deceptively easy when it's done well. In writing there is true talent and skill development behind turning out that clever phrase, finding the perfect metaphor, and gaining the supportive knowledge of proper grammar.
Likewise, good bookbinding skills are built in layers. It's time devoted to perfecting the art of leather paring by machine or by hand with a variety of knives, acquiring knowledge to select the correct thread for the paper to be sewn, understanding the properties of adhesives and which one to use for a particular material.along with "tooling up" with book presses, precision paper cutters, ploughs for smooth book edges, a hot stamping press and dozens of hand tools.
Focused on Binding
My time is devoted to binding both unique and traditional structures as well as repairing books. I also produce page layouts and digital retouching of photos and graphics using Adobe's suite of products: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator. I also have access to an illustrator for portraiture, scenics and the like, all customized to your needs. (I just happened to be married to this illustrator, so my access is 24/7!)
I accept custom binding orders of just one book-or up to 25. Because it's currently just me and a part-time assistant in my studio, I'm not equipped for larger runs at this time.
